A searing drama against the corrupt system.
Movie: Thudarum
Dir: Tharun Moorthy
Tharun Moorthy knows how to work with emotions which is a rarity in today's movies that tend to be always on the other side. It feels refreshing to see the tension that something bad is going to happen which the film carries all through its narrative. This makes it a very engaging watch, but this never feels forced at any point which is the quality of a well cooked drama. The story, which has been in K.R. Sunil's mind for years seems to have aged well, with Tharun Moorthy chipping in to complete the screenplay.
Tharun's previous movie showed us how well he could bring the mental state of the characters on screen. The characterization of Sattar and his Umma made 'Saudi Vellaka' unforgettable. While he fought the issue of pendency of cases in it, here, he made use of Mohanlal's stardom to bring a poignant drama against the law enforcers who turned villains. It was rather refreshing to see an honest Mohanlal character in ages and he excelled as Shanmukham. Shobhana as Lalitha also showed that she still has 'it' with her powerful eyes.
This is an intense watch, which has an antagonist who at times overshadows Lal with his terrific performance. Would definitely like to see more from him in the future. Thudarum can leave you both full for its execution and drained at the same time for the pains inflicted upon us by the system. And, beware of the fact that it doesn't take much time for a cute looking Mark 1 Ambassador to turn ominous.
